Our Favourite Gazebo Designs from Around the World

Our luxury wooden gazebos, summer houses, garden rooms and garden shelters offer beautiful contemporary structures that are a unique reflection of you, so you can make the most of your outdoor space all year round. But gazebos are so much more than a simple garden building. They are stunning pieces that epitomise outdoor living and relaxation, and have existed throughout history – even going back to ancient times!

They were first used by the ancient Egyptians over 5000 years ago where the wooden structures were the pride of their gardens, built near a good water supply and used to grow produce via vines, trees, and flowers. Today, whilst still maintaining this essence of being a garden supplement, they have evolved into an expansion of our homes, bespoke to our personal preferences whether it be to seek sanctuary outdoors or entertain guests.

In this blog post, we will look at our favourite gazebo designs from around the world, and the symbolism behind each one.

Pagodas

Our first favourite gazebo design has got to be the Japanese pagoda design. With their Oriental influence, pagodas serve as a great focal point for any garden. Pagodas are believed to have the ability to absorb negative chi, transforming your garden into a serene and blissful haven. This is why you will see a pagoda in almost all authentic Japanese gardens. They also offer a great shelter in which to socialise and eat al-fresco, similar to our own luxury garden shelters like the Serenity or the Horizon

Rotundas

A close second favourite gazebo design of ours has got to be the round gazebos, also known as rotundas, with some famous examples found in the Boboli Gardens in Florence, Italy. These Italian gazebo designs date to the Renaissance period, a time in which architecture and outdoor beauty flourished. Rotundas at that time were a representation of wealth, power, sophistication, and used by the wealthy elite as a social hub to entertain their guests and host incredible parties. So, what sets you apart from the wealthy Italian elite? All we know at Crown Pavilions is that we have an array of luxury gazebos fit to continue the long-lasting tradition of elegant dinner parties and having fun!

Pergolas

Pergolas are also a favourite of ours, with their vertical pillars supporting the crossbeams creating a beautiful open lattice pattern. Slightly different to rotundas and pagodas, they have a fully open-air design. This allows for sunlight to filter through whilst also providing some shade. Whilst they can be found everywhere in the world, the Mediterranean region is home to an abundance of pergolas, blending the indoors with the outdoors and allowing for winding vines and flowers to blossom.

So Much More than Just a Garden Room

There are many more designs inspired by the gazebo that exist around the world, and upon examining each one, you realise that they are so much more than just simple garden structures; they are representations of the relationships that we all want and crave. From the serene and tranquil ambience of Japanese pagodas to the Italian rotundas, to Mediterranean pergolas, each design offers a unique experience that enhances your outdoor living.
