Tips for Decorating and Building Small and Large Gardens

20 September 2024

Gardens, whether small or large, offer a break away from the hustle and bustle of daily life. No matter what the size, you can build a garden perfect for a sophisticated soirée, a peaceful retreat, or simply your own little comfort nook. We’ve created a guide on how to decorate and build your dream garden, regardless of its size.

Planning your garden

Assess your space

The first step in creating your garden is to assess the available space and identify any potential challenges or limitations that you may face. The layout of your garden is essential to consider, as this will determine how you maximise and make the most of the space available.

We recommend first mapping out your garden’s layout, including pathways, seating areas, and focal points, as these are key spots for integrating any garden furniture or opening your space.

Designing a small garden

Maximising your space

Just because you may have limited garden space doesn’t mean that you can’t have big ideas. Maximising your space is crucial, especially if you have limited garden space. Vertical gardening is a great way to utilise your space without creating any clutter. Furthermore, it creates the illusion of a larger garden as your eyes are drawn upwards, taking in the entire space. Similarly, container gardening is also ideal for smaller gardens, as it’s an all-inclusive gardening practice. Putting your plants in planters or hanging pots means you can decorate wherever you want without compromising on space, whilst also having the option to move things around if necessary.

Choosing plants

The plants you should choose for your garden thrive in small places. We recommend plants and flowers that serve multiple purposes, such as fragrant flowers and aromatic herbs like lavender, basil and rosemary for a sensory treat. Bright, blooming flowers such as geraniums and irises are perfect for hanging pots or plants as they don’t need too much space to grow but are beautifully colourful.

Decorating your small garden

Less is more when it comes to small gardens. Having too much garden furniture can make it feel like there is too much clutter, giving the illusion that it is smaller than it is. You need to think about what you’ll be using your garden for, and what you need from it, and this is what your starting point will be. You might want to create an extra space for dining or entertaining in a corner of your garden, which a garden room is perfect for. Opting for a smaller model also enables you to use most of your garden for more traditional purposes, such as water features, outdoor furniture, flowerbeds or simply some more lawn or patio area. A garden room will also be a stylish addition to your garden, as they come in various models to match your outdoor aesthetic.

Designing a large garden

Designing a large garden follows the same method as a small one: assess the available space and identify any potential challenges or limitations. In a large garden, you can accommodate a wider range of features that may not be as possible in smaller gardens. Furthermore, you have the option to choose from a greater variety of plants and flowers as you can. Trees and large shrubs can provide both structure and privacy to your garden. Moreover, you can create beautiful flower beds with a mix of flower varieties to ensure colourful blooms throughout the year.

Creating a pathway

A large garden should be connected to its various zones and features. The ideal way to achieve this by constructing a pathway using natural stone, marble, or brick, as it provides durability and style. Even a curved pathway can create a sense of mystery and exploration, leading to key areas of your garden.

Garden entertainment spaces

With a larger garden, you can create a spacious garden room or gazebo with an outdoor kitchen or BBQ area, expanding your socialising space and making it perfect for hosting guests. Pergolas are great if you don’t want an entirely covered area in your garden, as they allow sunlight to filter through while providing some shade. They serve as ideal structures for blending your indoor and outdoor areas, and you can also decorate them with climbing plants and vines for an extra touch of greenery.

Once you have decided on the desired look and purpose of your garden, it’s to start creating the garden you deserve.
